Today we’re doing something a little bit different. Instead of the normal fashion or beauty post you’d typically see on The Styled Fox, I’m getting a little personal and sharing with you a behind the scene’s look of my life at home. Meet Becks and Ripken, the real MVP – most valuable pooch’s – of our family!
I learned quickly how much joy a dog can bring to your life growing up, our family always had a family pet running around the house. When I went off to college, I said goodbye to those four furry legs and headed to North Carolina to embark on a new journey. During my junior year of college, I was blessed to care for and become the proud owner of a rescue pup named Dasher, we were insperable. Through all the boyfriends, job changes and new city adventures, we took on the world together as a team! We spent a decade together before he fell ill, and I said goodbye to my best friend three years ago, which was far too soon.
Beck’s was a gift I didn’t know I needed, at a time I needed it the most. When Dasher passed away suddenly, my heart was left with a huge piece missing. Like many others who have gone through similar losses, I was devastated. Just a few short months later, I began opening up to the idea of adopting a new dog, and Chris and I started visiting the humane society together. After a work trip out of town, Chris greeted me at the airport with this shy fluff ball and big almond eyes sitting in the passenger seat! Arriving back at our place, unsure of his new owners and new home, Beck’s ran right up the stairs and hopped straight on the bed with his eyes full and tail wagging!
Nickname: Fluff McGruff, Almond Eyes
Breed: Golden Mix
Size/ Weight: Taller than a typical Golden Retriever, thin like a greyhound.
Favorite Food: Purina Dog Chow Natural
Favroite Treat: Purina Beggin’ Strips and Frosty Paws
Loves to give kisses, be spooned aka snuggle, run in open fields, lick peanut butter, belly rubs.
Dislikes the water, being moved when he’s comfortable, waking up super early, the sound of the vacuum.
During Chris’ final year in law school we volunteered together and fostered puppies for several months. As a rescue, we saw that Becks was very timid in public situations and nervous around humans and other breeds. We had high hopes that this would loosen him up a bit and he quickly became engaged and more active when they were around. Becks transitioned well from North Carolina to Texas, much better than we had expected. But as soon as he became more comfortable with his surroundings, we began to feel like he was bored and needed a playmate, he missed the chaos and constant playmates that fostering had offered us during that time period. So we began the search for his sister, and welcomed Ripken to the family this past winter!
Breed: Full Golden Retriever
Age: 8 months
Size/ Weight: Runt of the litter, currently slightly under 50 lbs
Favorite Food: Purina Dog Chow Natural
Favroite Treat: Purina Busy Bone’s
Loves to lay on her back, wag her tail, play with her stuffed animals, drink/ play with water.
Dislikes sleeping in, being in the crate, time away from her big brother.
When it comes to Becks and Ripken, Chris and I choose to make two commitments daily. One, to provide them a safe shelter they can call home. Two, to give them the very best, each and every day. To us, that means making sure that they are healthy, happy and loved as frequently and as much as possible. Now, let’s chat about how we do that.
STEP ONE: Health. Nourish their body with quality food.
With so many dog food options available these days, each trip to the store can become overwhelming. Chris and I chose Purina® Dog Chow® Natural Dry food for Becks and Ripken because we want the best for our dogs and to nourish their body with quality food. The Natural Dry food has quality ingredients at an affordable price, featuring 23 essential vitamins and minerals all dogs needs, and 100% of the nutrients dogs need to help them live a long and happy life. We learned early on from the Vet that Ripken would need a puppy formula that would provide different ingredients specific to her growth. Purina makes it easy to shop for dogs at two different ages, while giving us the same quality. Purina Dog Chow is made in the USA, and is a customer satisfaction guaranteed or your money back! See the dogchow.com website for details.
STEP TWO: Happiness.
Becks and Ripken have two totally different personalities. Ripken is still fairly young and growing into her body, so you’ll find her being super clumsy, instigating her big brother to play, and full of energy all the time. Backs has definitely grown out of that puppy stage and has become more mellow, but enjoys getting rowdy with his little sister from time to time. While it becomes a challenge with two fairly large dogs, Chris and I make it a priority to ensure they spend a lot of time outside; whether it’s at the park, going for car rides, or long walks around the neighborhood. Purina provides a great variety of treats that makes it easy to train them, reward them for good behavior, or be active with them!
STEP THREE: Give love.
We often feel the most unconditional love from our pets. Regardless of whether or not they can speak to us, we know it and feel it in various ways. You’ll often find me having a full blown conversation with Becks and Ripken, and as soon as their ears perk and head tilts, I know they understand what I’m saying, and if I’m lucky, they will even talk back! Between belly rubs, hugs and lots of kisses, we shower Becks and Ripken with love daily. Find what works, no matter how big or small, and give love consistently!
