It’s here, its finally here guys! I cannot begin to express how happy I am to be able to share our master bedroom ideas with you all today. There’s so many things I want to talk about – where to begin?
When Chris and I moved to Houston a few years ago, I had my mind set on buying a house. After working to save money since college, my heart was set on making that investment and I no longer wanted to sink money into a rental property. I figured that there was no way the Texas housing market was as expensive as my former homes, but boy was I wrong! Chris was fresh out of law school and we both found ourselves in a brand new city, so we opted for a 1.5 bedroom apartment in the Galleria. Let me just say, that didn’t last long! I had just started my blog a few months prior and decided to take it on full-time after not finding a job opportunity I wanted to pursue, and we were running out of room! Poor Becks was getting restless, packages were overflowing with no place to be stored, and I can’t even begin to tell you how many times we both had to use the bathroom at the same time! So a year later, we went back to the drawing board…
We found ourselves a little more space, and a new part of town to explore! Still not ready to buy, we found a 2,000+ sq ft townhouse in East Downtown in an area that was being re-developed. An extra floor kept us from being on top of each other 24/7, a bedroom for guests (who am I kidding? It was more like TheStyledFox.com’s storage closet…) and fun neighbors! But after a few months, and another puppy, we felt like we were outgrowing our new space. So we finally made the decision to start looking at properties within Houston. After countless hours on HAR.com, visiting over 50 properties across town, we finally found our current home, and knew it was meant to be the moment we finished our tour. A year later, we are officially moved in and ready to create life long memories in our first home!
Let me just say that I began the design process long before we signed on the dotted line. When it comes to furniture, I have always been a firm believer that you should invest in quality pieces that will last a lifetime. It was hard to convince Chris to spend x amount of dollars on new furniture back when we lived in our 1.5 bedroom apartment, but we acquired new pieces with each move, and that made it a little less overwhelming! Our dinning room set was purchased while living in the apartment, and fits nicely in our kitchen fully extended. (You can see it here.) Today’s master bedroom ideas were all purchased when we transitioned to the townhouse, so it was the first room to be 100% finished in our new home!
Now let’s chat about the great debate. Chris didn’t really have any major concerns about the colors, patterns, or textures that I wanted to use in this room. It’s simple, clean and calm, which creates a relaxing space we both can enjoy. He wanted two things, 1) comfy sheets that actually fit our king size bed (we will discuss more later) and 2) a television mounted on the wall so we can ‘netflix and chill’ with the pups! What’s the big debate? Where to mount the tv, obviously!
I’m not a fan of the whole lets ‘sit a massive tv on top of a nice piece of furniture’ thing. Unfortunately we had to do that in our last place, and I just wasn’t going to have it this time around. Once I saw our Master Bedroom space, I knew exactly how to lay out our furniture to create a cozy area we can relax in, with optimal room to move around. My extra wide dresser fit directly across from the bed, with this beautiful gleaming primrose mirror on top, and that meant there was no room for a tv! Chris laughed at first when I proposed the idea of mounting the tv to left of the bed, he even joked around that he’d get a neck cramp from that angle, etc. But with the help from my friends at SANUS, I was able to convince him otherwise! We paid a little extra to have another outlet installed, and I used the handy SANUS mountfinder tool to find the best fit for our tv and wall space. Mounting the tv on the wall gives us more space, eliminates the tv from being a focal spot (or eye sore!) and using the full motion mount allows us to view the tv from any angle in the room! I’m pretty sure that’s a win win scenario, right?
While he still won’t admit that I was right, he does get to enjoy watching his favorite shows while lounging in bed with his three best friends… and that makes me happy! 😉 Ps, you can get design inspiration for your master bedroom ideas, browse their selections of tv mounts and products, as well as tips on remaining safe while mounting large electronics over on the SANUS blog!
Now let’s chat bedding. Do you know how hard it is to find duvet covers that extend over the right and left side of your bed? Nowaday’s there are so many options for box springs and mattress,’ that it’s become increasingly difficult to find bedding that is wide enough to extend down the width of the mattress. While we LOVE our pillow top mattress and how comfortable it is, one of Chris’ biggest pet peeves with our last bedding was that he couldn’t wrap himself up at night. So he was beyond ecstatic when I found this hemmed duvet cover from Boll & Branch! Now we both get to snuggle under 100$ organic softness and I no longer have to hear him complain, it’s the little things, right? Also, this limited edition pumpkin throw added a pop of color to our grey and white color scheme, and I love it!
