Attending NYFW is every girl’s dream at some point. Never in a million years did I think that dream would become a reality. In early August I connected with Houston bloggers and my now photographer, listening to stories about their trips in previous years; favorite designers, events around the city and overall experience. Intrigued, I asked as many questions as possible and began picturing myself in the Big Apple, bouncing around town in the latest trends. Thats when I knew I had to decide if it was a trip I would pursue. Before you know it, I was looking at flights from Houston to New York, making a list and checking it twice. For me, all decisions of this magnitude take a great deal of thought. Even more, I had just hit my one year blogversary in July and was still pretty new to the game. Would I get into shows? Could I afford it? Would the trip all the way there and back be worth it? Only you can answer those questions, but for the next week I will be sharing with you my “New Girls Guide to NYFW,” a behind the scenes peek into my Fashion Week outfits, shows attended and the low down on how to navigate your first trip. SO many of you have asked great questions over the last few weeks, so I’m hoping to touch on all of them at some point over the next week! Feel free to leave any you might have in the comments below and be sure to check back daily!
WHEELS UP! TX → NYC…
After several pro/ con lists were made, I decided to take a chance and brave New York! I’ve always found that purchasing your airfare 6 weeks in advance keeps the cost as low as possible and I was able to find an inexpensive flight with Southwest. Once my ticket was purchased, there was no turning back. Now to start planning…
First things first, your ‘travel tribe,’ is crucial during this busy week. I say ‘travel tribe,’ because let’s be honest, these are the people that are going to keep you motivated during the long and busy days, pick you up when you’re feet are tired of walking all over NYC in heels, and not get mad at you when you are hangray! We are all bound to be diva’s at some point, right? In my opinion, deciding who you will be traveling with is ultimately the most important part of attending NYFW.
For most bloggers who are building their brand and getting their name out there like myself, we see it as a business trip. Don’t we all wish we could have an all expense paid trip via Tresemme? Ugh…lucky biatches (I say that in the nicest way possible…) More often than not, I have experienced first hand how competitive and catty bloggers can be, are you surprised? You want to find those people that you click with; that are ready to hustle and empower you, but are still fun to be around after 12 hours of non stop uber rides. I can not stress enough how imporant it is to allow time to truly get to know people before you agree to room with them. Finding other bloggers that have the same goals and are likeminded will not only make the trip more fun, but will help you score invites and navigate the shows, which will be discussed in an upcoming post. If you have a photographer that you use, don’t be afraid to ask them if they are interested in tagging along/ applicable rates. Lauren Anderson of LA Photography, and I have quickly become close friends over the last few months. It was such a joy being able to navigate my first NYFW with her and you’ll be able to see some amazing photos of the shows I attended thanks to her talentend eye behind the camera!
If you decide to take a friend on the trip with you, make sure to communicate to them your expectations. They need to understand that YOU are the face of your brand/ blog and required to be your best 100% of the time. So little tiffs here and there can impact your mood and thus hinder your ability to market yourself at showroom visits and presentations. In the scenario that you can’t get them into a show or event, they need to be comfortable exploring by themselves. Again, in my opinion, this is the one time that you are allowed to be selfish (but not super competitive, there is a BIG difference) and your friend needs to understand that you will have to find a healthy balance between shopping on Madison Ave and getting to appointments on time!
Whether it be another blogger or friend, get ready for fun adventures!
Thursday afternoon was a blur as I arrived in NYC for my first day of shows/ events. From the moment I landed every minute was booked and the gloomy weather made it extremely difficult to get to shows/ appointments on time. I had RSVP’d to Desigual and Mathieu Mirano, but a late lunch and attempt to get a blow out made it impossible to attend! Hence the windblown look above. So I headed to the #NYFWCruise with GiGi New York along with brands Yosi Samra, High Fashion Home, Shop Ruche & Threadsence. Above is my fun and flirty look from the event as we sailed around Lady Liberty! While the fringe heels gave my springy look a fall vibe, the choppy waves due to inclement weather made it difficult to hold my balance! We sipped, sailed and chatted with some of my favorite bloggers. Shop this look below and be sure to check back tomorrow for a look at day two. Be sure to leave any questions or comments!
