It’s no secret, winter and I have never really gotten along. My heart belongs in the sunshine, with sandy toes and a cold drink in hand. While growing up in Maryland, we experienced some brutal winters year after year. At that age, I loved bundling up for hours of playing out in the snow. I don’t think you’d ever hear a kid (or teacher) complain about a snow day! I always adored North Carolina and the way the colors of the leaves change as one season began and another one ended. It got cold enough to need to add layers, but a ‘good’ snow fall was few and far between. Now that I’m beginning my second winter in Houston, I’ve got a few ways to help you beat the winter blues!
Stay Active. Whether you’re typically active year round, or trying to get your butt in gear for the new year, spend at least 30 minutes a day moving! A walk around the block with your pups, a quick jog, hot yoga, it doesn’t matter. I prefer 30 minutes of phsyical activity first thing in the morning, it helps jump start my day and gets my blood flowing, all while keeping me warm in those chilly temps. If you plan to up your fitness plan as part of a New Years resolution, this will also help you start strong!
Soak up Vitamin D. A daily vitamin is definitely a great start. But be sure to enjoy the sunshine whenever it is peaking through the clouds. Ever wonder why your dog/ cat always lays on the floor directly where the sun is beaming through the windows? They’ve got the right idea, it feels SO good. Days get shorter this time of year. By the time you’re clocking out of work, it already feels like its after 9pm! Whether its sitting outside on your lunch break or an extended trip to the mailbox, grab it while you can.
Get up and GO! You typically hear about people nesting this time of year and ‘cozying up’ inside. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t imagine anything more comfortable than snuggling by a fire with a cup of hot chocolate. But there’s something about forcing yourself to warm up the car and meet friends for drinks, or attend Sunday brunch that makes the day more exciting. Having something to look forward to helps make the long and chilly days more tolerable. If you’re on the fence, take my advice and just GO!
Add a splash of color. I appreciate the greys and whites floading my Instagram feed this time of year, but nothing makes me more cheerful than a bright splash of color. If you happen to find yourself stuck in the winter blues, try adding some color to your winter like I did in yesterdays post! Incorporate colors into your wardrobe, food, drinks, holiday decor, or a new pair of running shoes. Worst case scenario, it will remind you that the bright colors of spring and summer are just around the corner!
